Karthick Ramakrishnan: Reframing the Pew Study
Recently, the Pew Research Center released a statement that Asian Americans quote “have overtaken Hispanics as the largest group of new immigrants arriving each year in the United States.” The report received a negative response for perpetuating many stereotypes of the model minority myth.
Political Science scholar, Karthick Ramakrishnan, published an essay in Hyphen Magazine calling for a reframing of the study. Karthick recently served as a fellow at the Wilson Center and headed up the National Asian American Survey. His research focuses on civic participation, immigration policy, and the politics of race, ethnicity, and immigration in the United States. We discussed the importance and responsibility of using demographic data for our September episode of APA Compass.
The National Asian American Survey 2012 report will be out on September 25th of this year.
