GB Tran’s Vietnamerica: A Family’s Journey

While I was out east all summer, I basked in the balmy weather in New York City for a few days. I took the opportunity to hang out with GB Tran, and do our interview at his studio in Brooklyn.

GB’s debut graphic novel, Vietnamerica: A Family’s Journey, has been making waves: 2012 Eisner Award for Best Reality Based Work, Library Journal’s Best Graphic Novels of 2011, and Society of Illustrator’s Gold Medal in Sequential Art for 2011, amongst many other awards.

The story follow’s GB’s first (and subsequent) trip to Vietnam, his family’s history at the fall of Saigon in 1975, and their livelihood in the U.S. He looks at the difficult history of Vietname through the stories he heard from family, relatives and friends.

We recently aired this interview on APA Compass as part of KBOO’s membership drive. Listen to the podcast and pledge to our show!
